if some of the cheato dies (generally the underside of the ball that isnt lit) it could rerelease nutrients back in. just rotate the cheato ball about once a week.

aquaclears rock. basically your best hang-on-tank filter out there, in my opinion anyway.

i have heard good things about reeflux and (based in NJ) Icecaps. though i havent used any of the kinds you have asked about (im relatively new to MH, only a 1.5yrs) but iv been using th Phoenix 14K's and love them. i do use icecap ballast, awsome by the way.

i have the same tank, and yes it will. i have a fuge and when i didnt prune it for a while i got a cyano outbreak (sounds like what you got). i was like NOOO! not cyano! then i remember that i hadnt pruned my cheato in a while. i pruned it that day and within 2 days all the cyano was gone. :)
