How old is your test kit? I was battling a "nitrate problem." I decided to buy a new test kit and the problem went away. So, if your test kit is old, it can register nitrates that aren't even there. Try bringing your water to a LFS or try a new kit.
I think you took what I said the wrong way. My hair algae went away at the end of my cycling process. i.e. no nitrates or phosphates. If he has hair algae and his tank has already been through cycling, then they won't just go away. In that case he should check his nitrates and phosphates.
Obi...
Obi.. can you give more info? what are your tank params? How long has your tank been running? Hair algae is a typical part of cycling. It eventually goes away.
It changed hands and they started having problems with the salt. Someone on here might know more about it. I don't remember exactly what was happening, but a lot of people had problems with it.
In my experience, blennies fight uncontrollably. I'm not sure about in a 90 gallon tank though. It might work if you let them have their own territories. That's just my opinion though.
I'm curious to know if you get a lot of outages in your area or something? I'm pretty sure people that have to worry about outages only get battery-operated air supplies, as was already mentioned.
That definitely looks like cyanobacteria to me too... in my experience, just keeping up with water changes and siphoning it out works to clear it up.. it's more or less one of the stages of a new tank(i.e. under one year).
Someone said once to throw all the live rock in at once.. I can't quite remember why... something like it will only cause the spike once, as opposed to causing a bunch of mini-spikes..
I personally think that your diatoms will clear up on their own. What sand did you use? Some people have problems with silicates in the water causing diatoms... if I'm not mistaken.
I've shipped a lot of fish, and all I did was used styrofoam from Home Depot. You can just cut it to fit your box and then tape a heat pack inside. Some people use thermos' too.
HTH,
Chris
