Thanks, I hope so. I used to have more and they were all tiny but I have only caught a glimpse of these 3 (and they are 3x the size they were last year). I thought I would get more if they split themselves but I'm not betting the ranch on eggs hatching (but it will be fun to look out for them...
Very cool event last night. I have some mini brittle stars in my 30 gallon reef tank and I can usually just see the arms of 3 of them (big minis) hanging out of crevices near the top of the reef formation. I did a water change last night and I saw one of them come out and climb around to the...
I use eggcrate on the top of the tank (with a large cutout in the middle for the lights) to try to keep in jumpers, like purple firefish, but I don't use it on the bottom. I put the rock directly on the glass then fill in with sand. That way, the burrowers (like tiger shrimp/goby pair) have free...
Thanks for some more sage advice all. I knew that the fish in our tanks would eat eggs from mating pairs but never thought to buy (or get for free at my local fish market) some eggs and feed them to them. You think it would have crossed the mind of a guy (me) who's wife created a visual series...
Wow thanks for that Whitebird1 - fascinating stuff! I wasn't allowed entrance into a couple of those threads but I've been bounced out of clubs before (this time it hurt less). You really do learn new things all the time - I really like the idea of a locally collected FOWLR tank - do you have to...
ok sorry my last response was off thread topic (I stray mentally a lot) - and possibly misleading (although I did see the larger hermit pry the mussel open about 1/4 inch under its own power, I never saw it open it up fully - sorry again).
I shouldn't really be posting in the Advanced...
I didn't give it an EKG so I'm not sure about anything but we found a bunch of (what I assumed were) live mussels, clams, and crabs all hanging out in a tide pool and i was trying to open a couple of the mussels up myself to show my kids what's inside (I didn't use a knife) and they were...
Oh man I had one of those wide leather watchbands as a kid. I remember a guy in the neighborhood used to wear one of those watchbands around his bicep (that seahorse probably has a bigger brain than that guy did). We used to ask him what time it was and then when he'd flex to read the watch -...
great point. that youtube lecture I referenced talked about a shallow water squid that hosted bacteria with bioluminance to use as a stealth weapon during night hunting. The light coming from the bacteria on the bottom of the squid was adjusted by the squid to perfectly offset the moon/starlight...
beerfish (good name) - it sounds like you did everything by the book yet you still had a cyano bloom - have you ever tried, or known someone that did try ocean water, and failed? How do you know you would have had a worse experience if you used ocean water? Are you saying that our local water...
If people are all buying live rock covered in bacteria from the ocean (at different times and from various locations in the world's oceans)wouldn't swapping that rock then provide a greater diversity of bacteria than just using mud from the LI Sound everytime? Or are you saying that the very...
Hey Paul B, I posted this

a while ago and was referred to you!. I'm no expert, my first reef tank is only 10 months old but i had fresh and salt tanks on and off over the past 3 decades. When i...
I don't know about that 2 week, midsummer one either (although midsummer is usually a very flat time for surf) - our local ocean can get crystal clear any time of year but clear doesn't mean clean. Since our NE area outsourced most of our manufacturing to Asia long ago, the southern gulf stream...
I don't know about that one - I think alot of ocean life depends on the upwelling of nutrient cold water (happens at the beach after steady offshore winds) and I don't think you can kill elements or alter them much with such a small ocean temp change (70ish to 40ish)?
ha, great stuff there, thanks and thanks for that link, beer bottle reefer guy is really interesting (definitely not the sterile type) - excellent story repo man - 1fish2fish; my older brothers/cousins/ and whoever else piled on used to think they were real badass and hold me under until I drank...
ha, that's what I thought. I wasn't asking because I'm too cheap to buy salt but more out of curiosity. I have swum, boated, fished and still surf year round (although this winter is really flat) locally since I was a kid in the 60's, first on the western LI Atlantic but more recently around N...
that question and answer just made me think that i was wrong to narrow my suspects to the living - it could have been a powerhead that clipped the tail.
