How do you take the impeller out? I have tried to get that the plastic cap off that covers it but have not had any luck.

Well after changing out my pump my temperature did not go any lower than 81.0 degrees. So I than unplugged my protein skimmer for 36 hours and the temperature than dropped to 78.8 and that was the lowest my tank would drop. So after changing everything and unplugging everything I am at a loss...

Jenn, if you run only your actinic bulbs on the tank that will also help kill the algea. It had this problem before and I ran only my actinic bulbs for about 5 days and it all died with the help of a good clean up crew. Jon

Today my tank temperature is reading 81.0 degrees and I think it will continue to drop. Since I have switched out the pumps it has dropped 1.6 degrees which is good but not what I expected. I am going to let the tank be another 24 hours to monitor the temperature. Jon

I just switched out the pumps and my tank is now reading 82.6 degrees with the quiet one 3000 running. I have cleaned out the Mag 9 and it had alot of calcium build up on the impeller. The pump is sitting in some Trader Joes white balsamic vinegar to help cleanse it. I will give you a follow up...
