Wanted!!! Any successful Brain Coral Owner!

If you never get Cyano or other funky algae outbreaks then phosphates probably aren't an issue. I just thought I'd bring it up to rule it out. Carlo

    Magnesium way to high!!!!!

No salt. Maybe that was confusing. Just think "Dilution". If you can't test the solution because it registers off the chart cut down the sample in a known quantity with PURE RO/DI water. Once you get a reading you correlate the results by the amount of RO/DI water. Don't worry about the math...

How do I raise my Alk levels

Just to clarify something IMPORTANT. You quoted 1.71 which I'm sure is in meg/L. What I mentioned is dKH which is a German measurement. You can convert meg/L to dKH by multiplying by 2.8. So 1.71 meg/L of alk is the same thing as 4.788 dKH. While it's still way low it's a lot better then 1.71...

How do I raise my Alk levels

First of all "Low" is in the eye of the beholder. Natural Sea Water tends to run at 7/8ish dKH The general rule heard most often (I've heard anyway) is 9-11 dKH Guys running BLU coral method run at up to 16 dHK (calcium 500+, Mg 1600) Other who have SPS tanks run Calcium at 500 and Alk at 7/8...

Does this mean we now have a couple of feet in the door on hosting a MACNA event? :) Sorry couldn't resist. Carlo

    Skimmer for 24G Aquapod

Do you happen to know if this skimmer or the Tunze will fit inside a JBL 24g Nano? I'd much rather have one inside the case then hanging outside which I'm not opposed to doing but would rather not. Carlo

Wanted!!! Any successful Brain Coral Owner!

It sounds like Jcurry@wesketch is probably correct and I went in the wrong direction. As he said they can always adjust to lesser amounts of light easier and you can always raise them up a little at a time. I think you should follow his advice on the lights. But I still can help but wonder if...

    Skimmer for 24G Aquapod

Let us know how well it works after you get it and have it installed and running. Looking forward to it. Carlo

How do I raise my Alk levels

The pH will drop only a slight bit unless you dump a lot in at one time. This happens because of the amount of CO2 in baking soda. You have probably heard of washing soda/soda ash or baked baking soda (same thing) where you bake the baking soda in the oven for a period of time. This drives off...

Wanted!!! Any successful Brain Coral Owner!

That's interesting Jcurry@wesketch. My thought was that, they were probably under a lot more light at the LFS then in jerseyguy1996's tank and was having trouble adjusting to lower light levels already in the tank so they were bleaching while trying to adapt to the different nutrient uptake...

    Magnesium way to high!!!!!

It's not so much that the calcium can only be 1/3 of the calcium. It's just that in natural sea water the ppm happens to fall at about 1/3 (ionic balance). It can be much lower or higher. As Phyl pointed out with high Mg levels you can usually push the calcium also assuming the carbonates are...

Wanted!!! Any successful Brain Coral Owner!

I think I'd get them up much higher in the tank. I'd base this on the fact that both types of coral need "moderate" amount of light. They could both use more light then "moderate" so I wouldn't be concerned at all with them getting to much in your system. That one picture doesn't look to good...

    8 Million Gallons Georgia Aquarium

It's not really so much the water volume that makes it more difficult (going bigger) for them but the type of animals they are keeping. They need HUGE amounts of plankton in the water for the filter feeders. Not to many other aquariums face this issue. All this plankton in the water column is...

    Skimmer for 24G Aquapod

Johnny, I haven't read much on the saphire skimmer for Nanos. Do you have a link for the one you use? Love to see it. needreefunds, I'm interested in seeing the results too. I'll be sure to post the info in a thread. It obviously won't be done under controlled conditions or super scientific but...

How do I raise my Alk levels

You definitely got the idea how to do this. I ran the calculator and input tank sizes and a guess at 3/4 full sump. Input the rock and sand and came up with 116 gallons of water. Using 116 gallons, Alk of 5.8 dKH and a desired Alk level of 9 KH (3.21 meg/L), I came up with 42.1 grams, 8.9 tsp...

    heater

These are the types of little "tricks and tips" you never tend to think about until you get "burned" (literally) once by. What's kind of funny, is that I've never heard a LFS tell people this one. They push "so much" equipment (some stores anyway) you think they would do this with heaters too...

    Riddle's Anyone?

Ouch your right. Had it said "Some zadohs bould be zingzags" then it would work but it didn't see that. I rushed it without thinking that not all the pugwigs that are kahoots would have to be zadohs. Forget about the coffee. Try it after drinking all evening. :) Carlo

Finally setting up a reef again

Now that I would agree with 100%. :) I also think you get more then you pay for too. It's kind of typical to get an extra pound or two in the order which is sort of the opposite with some other rock you order. This is especially true on "box orders" with Fiji rock where you get a 44/45lb box and...
