Folks, if you've recently upgraded or renewed your annual club membership but it's still not active, please reach out to the BOD or a moderator. The PayPal system has a slight bug which it doesn't allow it to activate the account on it's own.
If you go the "med" route (not recommended in a reef tank) DON'T use RXP unless you want super high levels of phosphates in your tank. I got a super huge phosphate reading on one experimental tank after using this product and after lots of "looking" finally traced it back to the RXP. I mixed up...
I've done both and prefer the internal overflow but there is nothing wrong with an overflow box. The only suggestion I'd make with the overflow box is to make sure the height "bolt" is really snug and the overflow box doesn't move. I had an incident where I was cleaning the tank and hit the...
Why?
If you really want to do it I'd pick up an Oxygen test kit and do a couple of O2 checks late at night when the close loop isn't running to make sure you still have good O2 in the tank.

Unless it's a really big skimmer designed to be ran outside of a sump I wouldn't do it. It only takes one time for the skimmer to overflow and you'll wish you had it in the sump.
If room isn't a problem you could put the skimmer in a rubbermaid container (or something similar) with small pump...
Man that meter is cheap! I'm gonna have to get one of them. I'm presently using the Pinpoint TDS meter so I just stick it in a sample of water and check my RO/DI units that way. While I'd still use the Pinpoint meter it would be nice to have a unit mounted on the RO/DI unit itself!

You need to remove the source of food for the algea. It's the combination of Nitrates and Phosphorus that is causing your problem. I can tell you from experience the crushed coral is helping things as it is so think it traps organic matter.
From dealing with this myself and trying all kinds of...
That's one of the best short articles I've read on the subject and I'd have to say I agree 100% with it from all my testing. The only thing I'd mention or point out for those not familar is that the article says: "3–3.5" is required as a minimal working bed". This is the minimal and not...
3" really will not do much at all for you. There is still too much oxygen getting down to the bottom layers keeping it from going anerobic. If you go about 4" deep then it will be about the bottom 3/4" to 1" that will be doing the denitrification. The top 3 to 3.25" won't be doing anything but...
I would really doubt your zero nitrates are from your sand bed. Low nitrates are usually seen because of good proportion of rock weight to gallons, from refugiums, clams and some types of corals. It helps to feed on the low side and have a low bio-load fish wise.
The 2-3 inch sand bed isn't...
No pics yet but I have a Murcielago on order and should take possession in September.
Thinking of picking up a Z06 in may to hold me over until the new ride gets here. I really miss the 2 seat sports cars. Would like to set it up for track racing.
Current daily ride is a super built up WRX...
2"-3" is sort of in "no-mans land". It's not deep enough to get a good denitrification affect and not really thin enough to be considered a thin sand bed.
I have personally tried deep sand beds, thin sand beds and the 2-3" sand beds and I have found the best to be the thin sand bed. A thin sand...
Yea man, use the 125 as your sump/refugium. When you build your stand do what the manufactures never do and put a door on the side of the stand so you can always slide the sump out in case you ever need to put another piece of equipment in the sump (i.e. skimmer, reactors). Yep might be a pain...
My coperband butterfly eats it in my tank. I have half a dozen peppermint shrimp in my tank but haven't ever seen them eat it but I do know they usually will eat it.
Ed is making a tank display room downstairs. It is slightly bigger then what AC uses to display tanks. I'm really not sure AC has a bigger fish selection. Only 2 isles at AC are salt and the rest is not. At ILC upstairs is all salt while downstairs is not. Overall it's about a tie on fish.
AC...
Heck if I would have won I'd buy a Perfecto 265 for averyone in the club. Hell, maybe even help you stock it. :) One thing for sure with the amount of the jackpot it wouldn't even put a small dent in the winnings!
