Re: Calif. Academy -- Even More Pix -- Someone Stop Him
One of the neatest displays they have at the Steinhart is a completely dark aquarium full of 2 species of flashlight fish. The tank tas an concave dome installed into it, so you duck under and into the dome, and the blinky little guys are...
Re: Calif. Academy of Sciences --More Pix!
Gotta have a Morrish Idol or two
Common critter but the shot came out well:
There's a shallow shark 'N' ray pool next to the planetarium too.
This is from their cold water/Monterey Bay tank:
Sorry this guy didn't come out better --...
I just got back from a trip to San Francisco, where my brother lives. Among the 87 different things we crammed into that trip was a visit to the newly-reopened Steinhart Aquarium (which is now combined with a planetarium and museum and called The California Academy of Sciences). Here are some...
I feed mine from valves off of my return line. Fewer pumps! It works OK but I get air in the feed lines, so a cople times a week I have to crank up the flow to push it through the reactors.
#1 Put the CO2 tank next to the Ca reactor, not 45 feet away, if at all possible.
#2 I found it easiest to contact the people who made my Ca reactor, even aquatic ecosystems didn't have that tubing. They only charged me a token amount plus shipping. Plus they gave me a stupid amount with the Ca...
It's actually a kind of sargassum. Back when the live rock you could get didn't suck so bad, it was pretty common. I had it for more than a year, and sometimes harvested a gallon at a time from my 90G reef. No fish I found really eats it very much, it doesn't spread much either. What finally...
An LFS in my area has a sizable piece of wild "superman" monti (well, it's white with blue polyps right now) that has a sessile hermit crab living in it. My sort of thing... :o
Thanks Bax, one does try.
I have added another 300W heater and that seems to be making the difference in the heat battle.
The coral coloration thing is a mystery to me though. I need to do a serious water change and maybe start testing for magnesium. I also have made arrangements to supplement...
Yes, I've done it. The results are pretty gross but the corals like it. You have to be really careful to avoid overfeeding with that stuff (and golden pearls too). It's easy to pollute the tank. I think Eric would tell you that his recipe is somewhat variable, and as long as you get certain key...
MRC's general Ca Reactor instructions are here:

The trick to connecting the CO2 tank to the reactor, in my opinion (having just set up an MRC CR1) is to familarize yourself with the adjustments on...
