I have a reef devil deluxe . Used both internal and external. I don't use it anymore as it is an extremely finicky skimmer. Any food, additives or water height fluctuation will wipe out the skimmer for hours !!!! I would go with a skimmer that uses needle wheel tech over downdraft.

when money is no object or when you already have several thousand invested in the tank and want the best skimmer that money can buy!!

I spoke to the folks at Premium Aquatics recently regarding Octopus skimmers and they also recommended VERTX skimmers. they said these skimmers perform very well but not as expensive as Octos. anyone on this forum own or know anything about vertex skimmers...

red sea coral pro takes much longer to fully dissolve than IO. I use to leave it running for at least two days before using. when you said "a while", i hope it was at least 24 hours. if not , that's why your tank is cloudy. I'm using reef crystals now.

Ive noticed there is a tan like residue in my rubber maid barrel where i make my saltwater. what is this and can it harm my fish and inverts? how can you clean it out ?

I have an etss reef devil deluxe and i hate it. its the most finicky skimmer on the planet. every time you feed the skimmer gets wiped out for hours. if you don't clean every few days it does absolutely nothing! my next skimmer will be a needle wheel. most likely the octopus extreme 300.

Seachem Cupramine has worked very well for me when dealing with ich. of course in a QT only. if youre not sure whats going on just leave the DT fallow for six weeks. eight for velvet.Or since this is fish only with no LR, you can just hypo the DT.
