I had the same problem with mine, I solved it by slowing down the draining. I added a few 90's on the end of the drain pipe in the sump and the problem went away immediately.

I bought 2 kits, 3rd to come when budget allows. The 4 bulbs I went with: ge 6500 giesemann aqua blue giesemann pure actinic ge 6500 I will probably go with the giesemann actinic + for the next 2 bulbs.

You make a great point. "save money by not trying to save money". I guess I will go with the T-5 from TFJ. I would like to get 6 bulbs under the canopy, but I only have 16" to work with. :'( I am sure I can make something fit.

The seller said it is made in USA by a company called Catalina Aquarium. And the unit is UL listed. http://www.catalinaaquarium.com/index.php Looks like they use the same exact ballast as tek retros. Guess it is all down to the reflector.
