You amaze me, my friend.
Despite your negativity, knew you were getting back into it someday.
Didn't think it would be this quick, but I'm not really surprised (though I had no bloody clue you'd be opening your own aquarium this time around).
Seriously happy to see this going down, the few...
The Finnex with the FugeRay grows cheato like mad (and algae if you drop a piece of roughed up plastic, like the needlepoint plastic for hobbies, in there).
Tried to build an up-scrubber, a cheato reactor, etc...
After $100+ of the, 'I can do better', I admitted defeat and ordered another...
My previous established sump/fuges did wonders, but took months to kick in.
When I picked the HOB up from you a few months ago I've had 2 major diatom outbreaks, one so bad I had to treat with Chempure, yet I added nothing to the fuge outside of established rock from the tank, some cheato from...
TT,
Settings are way too low atm.
You want to make sure that your total W(watts) is around, at least, 120-140w for softies (zoas, leathers, palys). If you add SPS or such, you're going to want to eventually increase it to 200w+.
I've got one HD26 mounted 12" above waterline on a softie (zoa)...
Blennies good, though they can starve if algae runs low. I have a saddle puffer that keeps the tank clean, though if not well fed on algae and supplements he nips at the sps. Tangs (surgeons) are best but nada in a tank that small unless you plan to move them out as they grow.
I'd go for a mix...
D,
No, didn't bleach. Dropped them into a 1/10 ratio of peroxide/water for a few days.
Rinsed with RODI water.
Dropped them into tank with 1.025, a heater set at 80 and a powerhead at mid setting for a couple of weeks (with no lighting). Also added some Special Blend.
Waited for first diatom...
Thanks! Unfortunately its not held together too well. Have to find a solid way of securing it without looking secured, if you get what I mean. This is the first time I've done anything with branch and I'm thinking I may use a bit of it in the next tank.
Agree with the detritus. As bare bottom...
Few bits of coral in now.
Fish - clown, generic damsel, saddle puffer (to be moved up with growth).
Just went a bit silly and added river rock as substrate today.
Thought it might look good with the style of tank and would be easy to clean.
Will do an occasional report on how well it works out...
Oh, no idea. Unsure if the idea I have will work. If it doesn't (which I wont know for a few weeks) and Bob's reactor isn't suitable for you, drop me a line, we can trade. If my eperiment does work, and you're not interested in Bob's, I'll drop a line to him. All groovie. Thanks for the info :)
Bob, thanks much.
I'm going to take the reactor I have now and experiment a bit. If it works out, I'll definitely be interested in another one (for the tank to be bought next weekend).
I plan on having the wife hypnotized so she will believe the new tank has been there all along.
