I've done that at least twice Mike. Couldn't see 1/2" in to the tank. Guess I was lucky because the only adverse effects I had was clean up of the glass. Good Luck, let us know how you make out.

I saw a thread somewhere were a DIY'er screwed the plug into the adapter leaving it a thread or two loose. He then applied a bead of silicone from the inside so that after the silicone sets up, he could tighten the cap against the silicone to create a seal. Of course, you'd have to do this...

Unless you are a master glassmen, you or I can't tell by looking at the glass whether or not it's tempered. If you can't get conformation directly from the manufacturer, I would assume it is tempered. There is a drain calculator on RC: http://www.reefcentral.com/calc/drain.php?gph=950

I've used a dermal w/ the diamond bits on half inch. 3/4 might be too thick for dremal bits though.. I've also read of people using rotozips. You have to go slow and keep it wet/cool. Sorry I don't have a hole saw, it'd be yours.
