    The danger of NSW.

Just want to throw in there that the point of my original post wasn't to necessarily use NSW. But that for those interested, one of the dangers of NSW is to collect a sample with ich in the freeswimming stage. And that brackish water found near the shore is in theory, NSW but in hyposalinity...

Thanks buddy. I don't know what all that was all about. There's a lot of misconceptions in this hobby, some of it is folklore and some of it is commercial noise from retailers and manufacturers.

Just thought I'd share these photos so you can see how reefs are formed, where they are located. Patches of reef also exists close to land in protected areas like bays or like.

Not sure why you think that, but there's coral reefs all around all of those islands.

If you really like diving, try reading up on reefs. The most common reef type is called a fringing reef and those are close to land and beaches. They are really all over the place in the Caribbean and they aren't man made. I'm pretty sure we dived off the beach on one of the Virgin Islands, but...

My tanks are back and forth from NSW and ASW, maybe next year I'll set up dueling tanks and can write an article or book on it.

Just Google it. Personally, I've scuba in Caribbean right off the beach, but there's more than just there.

    The danger of NSW.

I spent a lot of summer on Orchard Beach, we'd ride our bikes, take the bus, take the train, walk over there. Did you know it's called Orchard Beach because there were apple orchards that led all the way to the water? I know growing up we always considered the water in the East River to be...

    The danger of NSW.

The general idea behind avoiding collection after rainfall is that a lot of pollution does get washed into the waterways, probably oil, antifreeze and pesticides being the greatest. I'm originally from the Bronx and you know NYC has a large sewer system, that sewer does go through a treatment...

Some reefs are located right off the beach.

Agree. I avoid collection after rainfall and near the shore during the summer months. High tide is best, but I just grab it anytime during the winter.

You'd have to use low range test kit as standard kit will come up 0 on ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and phosphate.
