Still a beautiful tank. Wish I had a place for it. Pretty sure if I brought it inside, I'd be sleeping outside though. I've still got an extra RR 50g in the garage...
This is the only video I've been able to capture of my reef basslet over the past six months: a 5 second flyby viewed from the back of the tank with room lighting only. Pretty fish, but oh so cryptic!

I clean my kalk reactor approximately never. If you go oversized by a bit, whatever precipitates just sits at the bottom, doesn't bother anyone, assuming you have a paddle stirrer like the avast.
My RO tank is about 3' above the tank it tops off into.., siphon would definitely happen, but the easy solution is this: a few feet of 1/2" PVC, a PVC end cap, a 1/4" John Guest fitting. The fitting is drilled and tapped into the end cap, and the cap also has a 1/4" hole. The ATO pump pumps UP...
Mine are DIY, and they look great... Too powerful, but great. But WOW I would not have done DIY if I'd known the time cost to do it right. It's by far the most time consuming part of my tank so far. I have 144x 3w Cree across 5 heat sinks all with optics, so a less ambitious project might not...
No skimmer issue... It goes into a skimmate locker that has a sensor to detect overfill.
Kalk reactor has a continuous paddle, so no stirring cycle.
Really scratching my head here. In any case, it seems to have stabilized for the moment. I'll have to do some serious water changes when I'm...
Obviously hard for me to see (I'm in England right now), but the pic I've been sent of the kalk reactor makes it look like it hasn't done any drastic pumping, so it's just the regular saturated solution...
But that isn't a bad theory.
I'm away from my tank, but have a friend checking the tank. Doing this all remotely...
I noticed a pH spike this morning, so he went over. It spiked up to 9.5 in just 10-15 minutes, and has been coming back down to normal over the course of the day (around 8.3). The calc right now is >520, dkh...
Actually, my tank manufacturer explicitly recommends the expanded polystyrene, and did NOT want me to use the pink foam (xps, extruded polystyrene). They want it to compress a bit, and the XPS doesn't compress much at all (you can walk on it, pour concrete footings over it, etc). I put down a...
Optics make all the difference. I have. 31" deep tank, Carlo wide ripple lenses on all Cree xp-g and xp-e. I get 1200+ par at surface down to about 200 par at bottom. Without optics probably 1/5 that. Otherwise my setup is similar, 30 LEDs per 8.5x12" square. I didn't get any of the exotic...
