I've done it plenty of times. I just finished cooking some right now. No, it doesn't make a mess. No it doesn't stink. The rock itself smells till you run it under cold water. Nothing splashes in the micro. I cook the rocks in a plastic container for 3 minutes.

I connected my chiller to the returns that were already there. Didn't need to buy a new pump.

I've had my returns going directly to my display.

Justin. Your tank will be fine for a few days without a skimmer. I have a Mag 9.5 you can use till your part gets there.
