I've been looking at a Diamond Goby for some time, and finally picked one up this past Sunday. In my visits to a number of LFS's I've seen as they eat sand and spew it out their gill slits, but never saw one that had a cave. One day after putting my guy in the tank, he's mining a good size...

    DIY Goby Cave

Here's what I've done....using 1 inch PVC and JB Weld Kwik Epoxy. Now I'm scratching my head on how to get this below the sand without poisoning the tank with excess nitrates and phosphates.

    DIY Goby Cave

Krista, the "plastic" grey conduit I showed above is PVC. However, I've taken another route combining pipe with rock. I'm working on it now and will post pictures when done.

    DIY Goby Cave

Has anyone put together a goby cave to try to keep your goby from undermining your corals / rocks. I picked up a Diamond Goby and did not know that they were cave builders. I've only seen them eat sand and spew it out their gill slits. Never saw one that actually built a cave. Well within...

    apex temp probe

I'm not familiar with Apex, but if it looks like a pH probe, it is NOT submersible. I have a Reefkeeper which has the option of using a similar type temperature probe....I think they call theirs an I-Probe....but instead I use a thermistor which is fully submersible and lasts forever. It...

    Reef-a-palooza volunteers

Yep, I got that as well on Saturday....and there was a sign just outside the garage that clearly stated no solicitations or pamphlet handouts allowed.

    Fishing off Montauk LI

Nice! We use to be able to find fluke that size right in the Raritan Bay....we called them door mats. Now you're lucky to catch anything, and they have to be a minimum size to keep (which is a good thing).

    RAP scores

Didn't win anything in the raffles.....didn't buy anything....had a great time....and here's the best part, used my Reef-A-Palooza shirt to get an additional 10 percent off the already 40 percent at ACC for a new fish.

Also, for the first timers, parking is free and located under the convention center. You enter to the left of the center, between the center and hotel.

    Remaining T-shirts (going to RAP?)

Mike @greybolt03 sent me a PM to pick up his shirt at RAP. I'm going to assume he let you know Mark, and Mike @mnat has that shirt.

    HELP!!!!!

This is a guess, but maybe your water is too clean. Corals do need a little phosphate and nitrate to grow and look good. What are your nitrate and phosphate numbers running these "sponges?"

What I did was extremely mild compared to @Paul B . He goes out into Long Island Sound (along the shoreline) and collects muck, pods, beer bottles and goombah's in cement shoes to add to his tank.

    Inherited 90

Well I pulled a @Paul B today. I was up at our waterfront and saw that the waters were very choppy, with a fair amount of green and red algae on the beach (must be a storm at sea). I picked up one of the smaller pieces of red and brought it back to the house. Here it is in the refugium...

    Pump question

Holy crap!!! When I saw you recommended a diaphragm pump, I'm thinking, "That's not going to work." I just looked up that pump......and it states that it will pump up to 130 feet high! I'm impressed. HERE's the link. Good stuff Joe.

    Pump question

The frictional head loss through 1/2 inch tubing is pretty high. Might be better off using 3/4 or 1 inch rigid, at least up to when gravity will start to take it "down hill."

To Acid Wash Rock....Or Not...That is the Question

I have never been convinced that acid washing rock does anything more than give you less rock. I would surmise that any phosphate that is removed quickly finds another site to attach to on the remaining rock. If anything, you are making a phosphate soup that simply re-attaches to the remaining...

Worst Sump In the World!!! My sump is an embarrassment. It is totally loaded with hair algae and calupra that I added a while back, and now can't get rid of, not to mention the aptasia and bubble algae. It also has a deep sand bed, and I think that is the root of my problem, with it...

Happy Father's day to all those dads out there. I had a great one, just picked my daughter up from the airport flying in from Phoenix.
