Hmmm. I would say put a ball valve on your return line to regulate the flow. Sorry I'm not at all familiar with that style overflow. I would also suggest removing the brass valve on you drain. Metal especially cooper and brass don't mix well with saltwater

What kind of drain system are you using (hang-on, durso, herbie etc)? In normal circumstances there shouldn't be any issues with "matching" flow rates between drain and return. As long as your pump isn't pushing more water than the drain can handle, the water being pumped into the tank will go...

The spike in ammonia could be your issue. Any ammonia is bad for both fish and corals. Also what is your alk at? And has it fluctuated lately!

Sps seems to be liking the cleaning

A little spring cleaning on the tank. Cleaned out the sump, cleaned the powerheads, cleaned the skimmer and pump, cleaned the splash sheild on the light fixture and gave the glass a good cleaning along with a water change.

That was my first thought as well maybe try trimming the gsp back a bit and see if things get better with the monti.
