Should try to test once a week after a while your corals will consume more than your weekly Water change will put back in the tank. Depending on the size of water change your doing you're only putting very little alk and calcium back into the tank. Eventually you're going to have to start dosing.
When I go away I make sure my ato reservoir holds enough water for the amount of time that I'll be gone, empty my skimmer cup but I have a float switch in there that will shut my skimmer off if it get to full. I have an apex auto feeder that will feed the tank so I don't worry about that. Also...

Yeah I saw that for sale I like t5s ran them on my other tanks with good results but a 8 bulb is 640 watts for 10 hours a day will jack up my electric bill and make a lot of heat in my canopy.
