People have been successful with it. If you are not a dose and test every day guy you can look at bio pellets which is essentially solid carbon dosing. The bigger question is have you tested nitrates and phosphates

You could probably get away with just one mp40 for the entire tank. You probably want to have it middle high so you don't disturb the sand bed and get the good gyro motion out of it.

Have you tested for nitrates and/or phosphates at all? What does your water change schedule look like? What fish/inverts do you have in there and how often do you feed and what are you feeding? Hair algae and cyano feed on nitrates and phosphates so what you want to do is find out the sourece...
