Afraid to do large scale water changes?

I want to further add to what John says above…..natural sea water, not an issue. However, I would strongly suggest not doing this extremely large water change with the powdered salts most (if not all) of us use. These “synthetic” salts contain ammonia to help in dissolution. With small...

    Removing miracle mud....

If it were me, and I wanted to remove the mud, I’d do it all in one shot. If you only take out a little, you’ve now disturbed the mud and kicked up some “nasties.” Shut down the sump, suck out all the mud and water, and replace with fresh saltwater. This way no “nasties” end up in your DT.

Reefbreeders Value Fixture on a 40 breeder???

Mike, now you’re making fun of the colorblind kid. I’m red/green colorblind, so you’re asking the wrong person. I don’t know if it’s my colorblindness or just my regular preference, but my Apollo’s are 20K….very blue….and that’s what I like. I don’t know the Kelvin of the...

Reefbreeders Value Fixture on a 40 breeder???

If we remember the Pythagorean theorem, and if I’m correct about a 40B being 17-18 inches wide, at 8 ½ to 9 inches above the lip of the tank you have full coverage (and that’s at the top edge of the tank.)……And that is on the center LEDs only. The ones closer to the edge of the fixture are now...

    Odd delivery

Depends on the salt you’re using, how frequently you do water changes, and the volume of water you change. I’m still nursing the first bottle I made about 3 – 4 years ago. I don’t dose very frequently because it’s in the salt I use….and sometimes too much. What you do need is a good alk...

DanceDanceDance Here’s the recipe when you’re ready……3 cups or Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) plus 5 cups of magnesium chloride and brought up to one gallon of RO/DI water. I found it best to individual dissolve each ingredient in RO/DI water, then combine the two, and bring it up to one...

Reefbreeders Value Fixture on a 40 breeder???

It would be perfect for a 40. I have the same fixture over a JBJ28....cranked down to about 50% on the pots.

DIY Kati/Ani DI unit – Problem

So what am I doing wrong??? First I have to mention that I regenerate DI resin…..very easy to do. To make the process even easier, I decided to make my own Kati/Ani DI unit by using a two chamber RO unit. I pulled off all the RO stuff and was left with the two canisters. I purchased...

I was wondering what happened to my BRS Magnesium Chloride order??? Actually if you need Magnesium Sulfate to get the right ionic equilibrium, just go to your local drug store and buy Epsom Salt….that is Magnesium Sulfate. That is what I’ve been using.

    Looking for Acros

Why not come to our frag swap on June 15th. There should be a ton of corals there, with no shipping costs.

    Alk crash

Alk cannot be zero. There is something wrong the the test (or the person doing the test  ) If you lived a little closer, I'd come over with my test kit. Do you have another reefer close by or an LFS that could run you alk numbers?

    Homemade Roids

My favorite (and my fishes favorite) is a flake food that was purchased through a member-group buy from Almost Natural Tropical Fish Food. My fish loved this stuff and we should probably do another group buy for this stuff…..I think the minimum was 25 pounds…..but it’s great food. No!

    Homemade Roids

I have heard a couple times that the use of ReefRoids results in high phosphate in your tank. Again, I’ve only heard this and cannot verify it. However, it did concern me, since I had been using ReefRoids. So just to be safe (maybe), I decided to make my own coral food. I took a couple...

    Biopellet Reactor Help

You tell me. It's coming with a partial bag of BRS biopellets. Does the brand of pellets matter?

    Biopellet Reactor Help

OK, thanks John. So the numbers I’ve posted above….426, 575, 450, are in the ballpark for my roughly 115 gallons of water. Now I’m happy and feel that I can start with the quarter dose of pellets and slowly increase to the roughly 500 mls of pellets. Good stuff! Thanks.

    Biopellet Reactor Help

But John and Mike, you’re still talking fractions. I need total tank volume to volume of biopellets. John, your “John Warner” recommendation of 500mls is for how much tank volume? And Mike, I need tank volume to volume of biopellets. Thanks.

    Biopellet Reactor Help

Thanks for the replys guys, but where did you find your “recommend dose?” BRS says 1 ½ cups (355mls) biopellets for a 75 gallon DT, so, for a 90, that would be a target dose of pellets of 1.8 cups (426 mls). Another site states five times total water volume in gallons for the mls of...
