How's everyone making out (roll call)

Thanks Taz...again, I'm the lucky one. Here’s that original picture I posted of our boat ramp just before Sandy, showing the extremely high tide….you see those nice floating docks: And here’s what it looks like now…..ALL the floating docks are GONE! My guess is that the height of the...

How's everyone making out (roll call)

Sorry for those who lost their tanks….or even worse. Certain areas of our town got hit pretty bad….many houses flooded and a couple lost….knocked off their foundation. I spent today helping friends in the flooded area. What gets me is that home owners isn’t covering anything and they now...

Storm projects. What are you working on?

Wow! Looks good. I’ve been sucked into the incessant reporting on Sandy, sitting on my fat you-know-what watching TV. . I did make 15 gallons of fresh saltwater. Does that count?

How's everyone making out (roll call)

Between the wind and surge, the water is not leaving the Raritan River. Even with low tide approaching, Weber Street and Winding River developments have had a mandatory evacuation. In the past they have seen three to four feet into the first floor. Here’s the Sayreville boat ramp and the...

    LR Curing Process

Sling, some rock is known for leaching phosphate. As far as I know, there is no way to speed up the "cleaning" of that rock, short of pulling it out and finding rock that is phosphate free.

    Attention generator owners!!

Phil, I really like that little storage shed for the generator….I can do that. But for now, my generator sits out on my screen enclosed porch under a piece of plastic….and I just took this picture, and it is windy outside. It's coming!

    LR Curing Process

I’m a little confused by your questioning, but some live rock can leach phosphates. So your problem may be your live rock. And yes, you can speed up the “curing” of rock by adding a nitrifying bacteria…..BioSpira or Tim’s as examples.

So it begins - The greatest storm of our times?

Nick, I agree. The USGS has what is called the 100 year flood. Anyone want to guess how frequently we are supposed to see these?:grin: In our area, it is 12 feet above mean high tide. Well we’ve seen these, I think, five times in the last twenty years….and tomorrow will be...

So it begins - The greatest storm of our times?

I just got back from a visit to the Raritan River....and this is at least 24 hours before the storm hits....and about three hours before high tide. The water is at the max for our boat ramps. Another three or four inches and you can't get onto the boat ramps without getting wet feet. THIS...

    Natural Gas Generator

My next-door neighbor owns a bar/restaurant and is considering putting in a natural gas generator with a transfer switch. I know some of you folks have done the same for your tanks/house. Who does this kind of thing? Any recommendations on the contractors who do this would be appreciated.

WOW that hurt! Guess I should've fixed that!

Don, this is serious stuff. The tingle tells you to LOOK AT ME NOW! Glad you are OK. Start unplugging to find the culprit. I’d start with your heaters. They are always on the top of my list. Find it and get it out!

    Heaters

Here’s my suggestion…..never……never…..just trust the controls on a heater to heat your tank. Did I say never enough? You need to use a controller with your heater to make sure that when it malfunctions….and it will……it doesn’t cook your tank. I’ve cooked one tank, and that’s what...

Anyone have any aquascaping tips or tricks to share?

Geeze Jim, are you sure this is true? I’ve always thought the rock-work looked closer because I had my face pressed up against the tank!
