If your nitrates at 50 are in this tank, you need to fix that first and foremost. 3-4 50% water changes will get you back in line quickly. Otherwise it is going to be a long slow road to recovery.

When we were pumping from under the stand we were using a Mag 12 with the impeller from an 18. That pushed about 1500gph which was perfect for keeping the dual overflows quiet. Anything less than that and it was noisy as all get out.

How many MP is your camera? I'd always recommend 2 cards over 1, but depending on your MP you might blow through a 1gb card too fast. I know I do on my D200.
I don't think there are stock tank sizes that are 30" front to back, but if there were, that would be a GREAT dimension. Probably worth doing custom.

There are many sources of PO4 rather than your RO/DI. Food, carbon, etc may all contain PO4, and unless you're actively removing it (remover, huge weekly water changes), there's a good chance you have it in your tank. The remover should help you there. I have the colorimeters for each and like...
