Folks, if you've recently upgraded or renewed your annual club membership but it's still not active, please reach out to the BOD or a moderator. The PayPal system has a slight bug which it doesn't allow it to activate the account on it's own.
a gem tang will run you more money than a down payment on a car these days...assuming someone even has one to sell to your father.
How about picking up a book first on fish - like fenner's conscientious marine aquarist? Maybe they have one at your local library (or local fish store) to browse.
according to Fenner - it'll keep the eggs in the mouth for a week before hatching. Good luck - are you planning on moving him to QT to try and save the fry?
thanks for the update. My first meeting was at your place and the tank is beautiful - so is the workmanship on the tank stand/cabinet!
Congratulations on the 2 year mark. The tank is gorgeous.
I agree with poconofishy.
They are rather common in aquariums. No harm unless they populate the front glass of your display - then they kinda look ugly...and you've been lazy with the mag float ;)
On the snail - it's hard to tell. Try reading this - best reference I have found from Dr. Ron on...
link doesn't work.
sponges are filter feeders. Do not expose to air and be prepared to procure live phyto to feed it. I suppose the freeze dried dead phyto might work but i personally wouldn't bother.
I wouldn't try a sponge unless I felt confident in my husbandry for filter feeding corals.
While acrylic does make the most sense - a glass tank could be used if you take precautions...
Like if the sandbed is thick enough and teh grains are small - any mantis-made burrow would collapse and therefore it could not reach the bottom. To create a "safe" burrow, add in a large U shaped...
most likely amphipods. If they are really big (shrimp size) then you could have a predator like a mantis - but that is highly unlikely.
Google up amphipods and compare with what you have.
Copepods will look almost like little white dots of snow on your glass...
The problem with most "bottled" retail plankton is that they tend to clump together and / or are of the wrong size or species for the fauna you want to feed.
So here's the 411 on plankton.
Best plankton? Well get it from the ocean of course. But then you're also likely chancing getting...
should be fine - the only possible downside is if the shells act as a coarse substrate - thereby trapping detrius etc. Don't get shells that are artificially colored!
never heard of them - what makes their live sand so much better? Just seems to not cloud the tank as much. When I think "live" sand i'm hoping to get live fauna in there...
if I want just bacteria on my sand - I'd just as well get dry sand and let the LR seed it.
Just my 2 cents. If you get it...
Is that a Mag Drive?
can you run a Mag drive external like that? I didn't think so... ???
also when you say you get water straight from the sink - as in the RODI or as in from your faucet tap water? The brown stuff is likely to just be diatoms but it's only going to get worse if this is...
Per Dr. Ron Shimek - if you can get a pic of the operculum, or the "opening" of the snail, there should be a small "pit" like circle in the "lid". If it has it - it's likely to be a collonista.
