"Installing" live sand and kick starting a cycle

Wet live sand is still not a problem…either use a big pipe or large mouth funnel. And most likely you will see a mini cycle. I have always been amused by “live sand’ that has been sitting on the shelf of some LFS for 6 months plus. I can’t see how it could still be “live.” Anyway...

"Installing" live sand and kick starting a cycle

Adding stock tank water will do nothing except contaminate your new water with high nitrates and phosphates. Very little bacteria is found in the water column. I'd add the sand and let it cycle. When done, start adding fish, etc. Do you know the trick about using a pipe and funnel to add...

What you get for Black Friday

    Reef Safe Black Silicone

I would suggest removing the old because the old won’t look good with the new, and as mentioned, silicone doesn’t stick the greatest to old silicone. I would make sure the glass is squeaky clean of old silicone….use a single edge razor to scrap off all the old stuff. And John, RTV products...

    Best Log Keeping Smartphone App?

I’m an old fart, so my “app” is a Bic pen and a bound notebook. My biggest problem is finding the notebook from week to week. I just need to find a permanent spot for it.

    39 gallon nano setup

I don’t know??? Is it me or is Olivier’s rock making an obscene gesture? I can only guess Olivier is making a statement about his old tank being wiped out.

    Dosing questions and proper levels

Water changes alone will not maintain alk and calc levels in a SPS/LPS/Clam tank….you need to supplement. Since you are just starting dosing, I’d start on the low side and creep up to where you need to be. This is especially true with ALK. Right now your CALC looks OK, but that most...

    Chinese LED fixture Blackwood, NJ

Dan, unless something has changed with these fixtures, I do believe it is a 120W fixture. Yes, they are 3 watt LEDs, but they are max’ed out at running at 2.2 watts. I’ve got four of them and they all have 55 LEDs and all are rated at 120 watts. GLWS

    Dan's 90G Reef

I think you have a nice crop of dinoflagellates in your tank.....not bubble algae. HERE is a good read by Dr. Randy.

    Curing Marco Rock: Necessary?

All dried rock needs to be cured. Now you typically can get away with putting one or a few pieces into an existing tank without curing, but that too can be a crap-shoot. I’ve done it with a few small pieces successfully. You are starting a new tank……Cure it!

George, the only thing that gets “bare” is that stick you see in the middle-right….an American Dogwood. Otherwise, the American Holly, English Holly, Chinese Holly, Rhododendrons and Azaleas are all evergreens. And how dare you question my engineering :o….oops, hold on, déjà vu moment...

    New Generator

David, not sure what shed you are using, but that shed hold down you show above is for a standard shed with a fixed roof. I’ve used those before in strapping down, typically metal sheds. If you are using the type that Jim taked about, I would suggest doing what is stated in the...

    Inherited 90

Thanks Pete, Jim and George. Pete, the likelihood of me ever using this generator again is very slim. We have lived in this house for 30+ years and we just don’t get extended power outages in this part of the State. And, if we do loose power, it typically comes back on with a minute or...
