Looks like you have a great setup to start and taking it slow is always the way. For water changes, you can go through the floor or just get a really long piece of tubing to run the water changes from the basement up stairs.

Welcome to NJ and back to the hobby. The only real knock on the black sand is it has iron in it which can stick to magnets and scrape your glass IF you are using a magnetized scraper. In a nano like that, you won't have that issue so enjoy the sand, I have always like the look of it.
