"If you want to upgrade your tank I want you to upgrade my front porch!"

Looks great Matt! Nice job. I'm also willing to bet you passed out somewhere in the house after doing all that in one day.

    DIY Feeding Ring

So with all this new flake food I have, I thought I'd go back to setting up the autofeeder. The one issue with floating flakes is that too much go down the overflow before it could be eaten. I was aware that Petco had feeding rings on their website, so I stopped into the store. No rings...

    First frag tank

Hey guys, I wasn't looking for an arguement....I'm looking for the documentation....maybe a Randy Holmes Farley thing that states this stuff is bad. I just don't want the anecdotal evidence to poo-poo the use of white egg crate. Algae might be growing more on white because white reflects...

    a new 90

Here is what mnat is suggesting.....your rock is dead....it needs to be cured/recycled. Set up your rock work in the tank the way you want it, fill it with water and mix your salt in with the water in the tank. Adjust to final SG, put in a heater and a little circulation and then sit back...

    First frag tank

What the hoot is this nonsense about. Egg crate is made of polystyrene......this is the stuff that can't be recycled because it doesn't break down. I've had white egg crate in my tank since 2008. Could someone give me a reference if this stuff is a problem in our tanks. I've never heard...

    Power out!!

John, I definitely agree with your assessment....especially if you are in a area that rarely sees power outages. I have a slightly larger generator from Sam's for $300, and it is the best 300 I've ever spent. It paid for itself in just the food in the refrigerator/freezer. This little...

    BTA and SPS

I put an RBTA in the tank in 2007/2008. It went into the tank in the left rear corner. It immediately moved completely across the tank to the right rear corner. Hasn't moved since.

What Goes Around Comes Around Back on page one of this Tale (about 3/4 of the way down), I diagrammed the bubble trap I made that was used as water entered my refugium. I termed it the Rube Goldberg bubble trap: It worked, but it was bulky. So I mulled over some ideas and came up...

    tank temp

What size is the QT, and what is the ambient temperature. For a tank in a "room temperate" room, a 250 watt should easily handle a 90 gallon tank. Do you have the heater in a controller? And if so, is it in a plug that can handle the wattage. I had this problem with my 300 watt...

    39 gallon nano setup

What size overflow do you have? By the way, I'm not an expert on noisy Glass-Holes overflows, since mine never had the noise problem. Anyway, give me details of yours and pictures of the plumbing, and I'll see what I can do. The first thing I'd want you to check is to make sure you...

Looking up the sand I find this: Origin: Imported (Canada) That tells me that this is not calcium carbonate based sand....it's silicon dioxide based. You really don't want silicon based sand in a tank.

I've got a problem - Do you have a solution?

I'd like to just add a warning and a bit of advice. Do not raise alkalinity more than 1 dKH per day. If you wish to use an "alk" buffer, I would recommend soda ash (sodium carbonate) over baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). Soda ash has a slightly higher pH and is a stronger alkali then...

I've got a problem - Do you have a solution?

You have an excess nutrient problem. My guess is cyanobacteria....and if not that, some other algae. What you are seeing are oxygen bubbles created by photosysthesis. Clean up your water. You can do this by running a skimmer, performing water changes, using chemicals such as GFO and...

    Hanna meters

An X-Ray Flourescence Spectrometer will determine elemental analysis without the use of any reagents. I am not aware of an "automated" machine, so you'd have to figure that out. Out of curiosity I checked ebay.....found two used machines....one for 16,000 and the other for 99,000. Maybe we...

    Using old rock help please

I'm not sure I understand your concern....it's dead rock. The rain water most likely is slightly acidic....that's "normal" rain today. If you are still concerned, take the rock out and let it dry. Either way, you have dead rock, and therefore it requires curing.....at least a month or so...
