Folks, if you've recently upgraded or renewed your annual club membership but it's still not active, please reach out to the BOD or a moderator. The PayPal system has a slight bug which it doesn't allow it to activate the account on it's own.
Just caught up on this thread and wow it is a great read. Couple of questions:
They now sell biospira which is basically bacteria that you put in your tank to get it started. If someone was landlocked would you recommend adding that to a tank to keep the bacteria levels up. Here is a quick...
When I sell things I do pickup or very short delivery ride only. I am sure this cuts down on a large crowd, but I am not going to deal with shipping costs and problems. With corals you kinda have to post pics as everyone has named things differently. Do it by groups of corals which might make it...
Basically I wanted to start a thread to help other people who were interested in building a salt water tank but did not know where to start. I will start.
Tank stand lights: juice44
Fish: Tropiquarium, Aqua Oceans
Corals: smcooler, GregW, jonathon, Mr. Coral, Aqua SD, Dr. Mac, OG II...
Just went throught this myself. As Hawkeye stated if you up your Mag levels for a few weeks is will essentially expode the photosynthetic cells of the hair algae killing it. Also, are you running any phosban/chemipure? What is the "flow" in your tank like? Higher the flow, less chance of algae...
When they say display they mean your main display tank. If you have a sump or refugium attached to your system, calling it your display is just a way to differentiate between them.
Chaeto is a macro algae that look kinda like green spaghetti that you put in a sump or refugium to soak up excess...
I know smcooler was selling tubbs blue colonies for very resonable prices. Also check out Dr. Mac or Mr. Coral in the sponsers area. Both are having big sales on their corals and you can get some nice frags of blue zoas. I went through the same thought process a little while ago and ordered some...
We have been super super busy over the last few weeks, so the trap will offically go in tonight when we both get home from work. We are going to pull the cleaners out and we will keep you updated. As soon as we get it, it's yours.
An update: We finally baited and setup the trap this morning and promptly caught a shrimp....our cleaner shrimp. We released him and promptly caught the other one. So we are going to have to remove the cleaners and go from there. So good news: the trap works and now we know how to get cleaners...
Unfortunately with an all in one system you are limited in your capacity to cool the tank unless you are willing to drill into the back which I don't think you want to. You can get a chiller which will work but can be expensive. Also, when do you run your lights? By turning on the lights later...
Quick update: The clowns are both doing fine and have already started to host the BTA. It took them 3 days to figure it out so they are getting moved to the head of the class. I actually like the new aquascaping that was done so the tank looks great. We still miss the cherub and will have to...
Most people consider 76 to 78 the "perfect" temperature for a reef tank. You also have to take into account what is in your tank, certain organisms are going to be tolerant of heat spikes while others are not. Corals seem to react much more to higher temps than fish. Most websites out there will...
As long as there is some photo period, it doesn't matter when it is. We turn our MH on at like 5 pm or later depending on many factors. My 12g I turn on in the morning because heat and evaporation are not issues.
The BTA has been in the tank since sunday night so nothing yet. We are hoping they start to host the BTA as it has moved to about the same spot where the clowns hang out. The clown that looked injured was doing a lot better this morning and I will have to see tonight. We also have been dosing...
We have further theorized the the BTA stung the angel which then was sucked into a powerhead. Since I am an optimist, we got the angel out before it crashed the tank and we got to reaquascape the whole tank. Trop had beautiful flameback and eibli angels when we were there on Sunday so I am sure...
