Some new pics
All the pointy growth on the birdsnest are new. The thing is just growing like that and we could not be happier:
Our goby of the the pistol shrimp/goby pair made their home up front now (sorry for the streaks just had to take the pic then):
You have a much bigger tank than we had when we had the coral banded so you might be ok. Ours started with the aggressive posturing and then ate six shrimp and a cleaner goby. I know people who have kept them just fine in bigger tanks, so i don't want to scare you. If your shrimp start to vanish...
So I found the article now that I am home and will be quoting form that. He has a 50 g display and 24g sump with 8.5 pounds of live rock for the whole system. He does have a live sand bed but it does not look deep. He has 100 different types of coral, sps mostly, and 40 fish, mostly small. He...
I agree with phyl a blenny or goby/pistol shrimp should be fine. The shrimp you have to keep your eye on is the coral banded. Once he started molting and getting bigger, he ate all of our other shrimp.
We have a 5 gallon acrylic tank at the ready when we catch him. Someone has already claimed him now the task is catching him. He moved a mushroom over the entrance to his cave so you can't even see if he is inside or not. We will just have to be patient.
There was an article in coral magazine about a guy with a tank like this. He has a 55 gallon with 8 pounds of live rock. The tank is full of all different types of coral (like 100 kinds) and a bunch of fish. He runs a NeoZeo system to keep it clean. The tank is gorgeous.
And I will search for...
Do you ever see them during the day? Mine used to come out at feeding time and that is when I grabbed the buggers. Also, if you find where they are hiding then you only need to pull out that rock.
If you don't see them during the day, turn the tank lights off and just wait. I would recommend...
Merv I would be very interested in seeing a thread on putting together some rock work like that. I am not very handy, but I can learn for something as beautiful as that.
What kind of vodka are you dosing? He could have been a vodak snob. ;)
Do you have any hermits in the tank? Most people reup there cleanup crew yearly because they usually die out or hunt eachother to extinction.
Love the pistol shrimp & goby pair, the fiancee and I succumbed to temptation about two months ago and purchased a pistol shirmp & goby pair that is currenly living in our 30G.
Do you have crushed coral in the tank or is what I see in the photos just rubble and shells for your pistol shrimp?
Unfortunately the fiancee and I are not very good do it yourselfers... buying the trap was probably a lot cheaper than cutting ourselves with a razorblade would have been.
Unfortunately I don't think the gobies or the longnosed hawk are going to catch and eat the mantis, but we'll keep you...
Do you have clowns in your tank? Our picaso false percs fed the bubble tip we had in with them until it committed suicide, and now the female feeds our frogspawn.
Be careful with the snowflake, ours was VERY interested in trying to eat my clowns while they slept... and he was only about 14" at the time. How have you done with the snowflake re-arranging the rock work? Mine moved the rock our sebae anenome was on and really made the anenome unhappy... at...
The skimmers for nanos at this point are pretty bad. There are a few good ones and a whole lot of bad ones and you will spend a lot of money trying to figure that out. I do weekly water changes which keep the water clean.
