I removed sand a few months ago and totally love it. The bottom is now totally covered with coraline and the Kole Tang keep it free of algae/diatom. It's personal preference aesthetically but it's definitely easier to maintain. Only thing is not able to keep some of the sand dwelling fish.

When I cured rocks I used Brightwell PhosphatE. I know it is not a long term solution but after two applications the rocks were no longer leaching PO4.

Get an old tank and practice. I was afraid to drill until I drilled my first hole. It's much easier than I anticipated. BTW I use the ebay $10 drill bit too.

I used to have Diatom/brown algae on my glass a lot. Needed to clean the glass every 2 days. Now it's all gone. Removing the sand may have helped but I think it s just new tank syndrome.
