If you can remove the rock do it. I would scrub it and bake or dry it out. Yes, it will be dead rock but be LR after a few weeks when you put it back.

I have to agree don't go cheap. I went through several cheap skimmers and it was nothing but a headache. I finally picked up a Nac-7 and love it.

Since I have to hook up my RO/DI to the kitchen faucet or outside I use distilled water during the winter months. I get it from A&P for 99 cents a gallon but is on sale now for 79 cents. I never had a problem using it for top off or a water change.
