    Humming Birds have Returned

Bees aren’t a problem. Ants could be if they can easily walk the distance to your feeder. The one feeder I have hanging in a tree had a problem with ants while the one hanging off the side of the porch does not. There is a simply fix for ants….a moat made from a spray can top. If you have the...

    I Called In Help!

Rod, these are not actors, but are the real Batman and Robin.  If you promise not to tell, I will let you know that Batman is actually Bruce Wayne and Robin is **** Grayson…but again, don’t tell anyone because they don’t want the evil-doers to find out. EDIT TO ADD:  Wow, filters must be set...

    I Called In Help!

I also noticed the spelling error….It should be: Dada Dada Dada Dada, Dada Dada Dada Dada, BATMAN! Everythin else loks goood. ;D However, also realize that the picture you posted is a Batman imposter. Here is a picture of the real Batman and Robin

    Humming Birds have Returned

OK, here’s what I know with my 20+ years of feeding these little hummers: We (East Coasters) only get one variety of humming birds here….Ruby Throated HB. Of the many feeders that I have tried, here are the two that I’ve had the most success: They hold about 1 ½ cups of feed, but I only...

    Humming Birds have Returned

Yes they migrate up into New England and Canada. They do need the habitat to move into the area. Also have her make the sugar solution at 3 cups water to 1 cup sugar. The extra concentration of sugar helps to convince the hummers to come to your place to feed.

    Humming Birds have Returned

Wow…four weeks ago. I typically gauge my filling of the feeders on what my father sees in North Carolina. He tended to be about one week ahead on us on the hummer return. I asked about two weeks ago and they still weren’t being seen at his feeder…which I put up a week after Easter. Maybe the...

    Humming Birds have Returned

Not sure if anyone else is a feeder of the little hummers, but they have returned. Was sitting out on my side porch and one came in looking for the feeders. They were not up yet and the little guy went over to the flowering mountain laurel to satisfy his nectar needs. I now have the feeders up...

    Aquarist Hypochondriasis

Phil, so what you are saying is that these are some hitchhiker snail that I picked up from someone. I’ve only introduced dwarf cerith, florida cerith, limpets, nassarius, Stomatella, nerite, zigzag periwinkle, and Mexican turbos. I was thinking that these were babies of either the nerite or...

    Aquarist Hypochondriasis

With two recent posts on flatworms and one on red bugs, I have been overly vigilant in searching the tank for these little creatures. So very late last night I turn on the blue LEDs and the tank is covered with hundreds of very small white little spots….covering the glass and rocks. Didn’t...

    Power Outage - FLOOD!

Bob, the “straw” is submerged, but only about a quarter inch. If it is not submerged, the pressure of the water squirting into the tank draws in air and causes bubbles. So now when the power fails, that approximate quarter inch of water is siphoned into the sump before the tube starts to suck...

    Power Outage - FLOOD!

Still wanting to just use a “pisser” siphon break, I drilled the hole out to ¼ inch. Still had too many bubbles being drawn into the tank. I know some members have this type of siphon break on their tanks, but I can only guess that the pressure I have is too great. Even with fixing the siphon...

    DIY Stand Build

    I don’t actually remember the costs, but looking at what is there, here’s a ballpark number. Dimensional lumber $30 1 sheet ¾ 4 x 8 Plywood $30 2 sheets 3/8 4 x 8 Plywood $45 Miscellaneous hardware $20 The doors I made from scrap lumber I had in the shop….3/4 pine with...

    DIY Stand Build

We used the framing plans on Reef Central. Here’s a pic of their suggested framing. For a six foot tank you want the yellow and red boards to be 2 x 6’s while everything else are 2 x 4’s. Here’s our actual frame and the following pictures are after it was skinned in plywood and finally...

    Beach Cleanup May 15th Poll

Sorry for the mini-hijack, but I looked up the Camel Cowfish and here’s what would keep me from getting one: “When stressed, the Camel Cowfish releases a poisonous substance, called ostracitoxin, from its mucous glands which will kill other fish in the tank very quickly.” “This fish can emit a...

    Power Outage - FLOOD!

I might have spoken prematurely. As I was working making a siphon break, the lights came on….on schedule. So I guess all the setpoints are OK. My first shot of a siphon break isn’t working. I use CPVC with an 1/8 inch hole in the end and it shoots into the water too fast, drawing in air...

    Power Outage - FLOOD!

So I’m in the kitchen with my wife this morning and I hear that tell-tale sound of water overflowing…we had a power outage…only lasted about five minutes. I had redirected the Locline to add flow to certain areas of the tank, bringing it pretty deep into the tank. So with the power outage, and...

    Beach Cleanup May 15th Poll

Wow! That's good to know. So I guess in my case, that is a picture of a picture of a picture....that would explain that look of an extra 30 pounds.
