Not sure what you mean by “daylight” bulbs, but generally speaking, the lower the K, the faster stuff will grow, including hair algae. What kind of CUC do you have. I believe Turbos eat hair algae, to an extend.

It's hard to tell from the pictures, but if there is room in the overflow, put in a durso. That should eliminate the "toilet bowl flush" you are hearing.
