A couple of quick thoughts: Salt need I think depends on if you are supplementing your water change with anything else. If you are using a calcium reactor or dosing pumps I don't' think you need any special salt. However, if you are just using water changes, yeah maybe you want to look at...

If you are worried about it, take some newspaper and soak it in saltwater. Throw that over the rock and corals while they are out. People use to ship corals like that so it should give you some time.

Any time you are removing/replacing sand you want to be careful. If you are doing it, do it like a quarter at a time and do a water change with it. We are overdue for a sump cleanout and it really should be a part of regular maintenance.

We have done cultures of tiger pods in the past and we do some brine shrimp as well for some extra food. Very easy to setup and a bottle can last you a long time.
