I had this same issue. I dosed chemicals left and right to no avail. Bought more fish can't keep nitrates down with a skimmer and a packed fuge. Forget chemicals go the natural route and you will be happy you did.

As most of the above said just a bubbler will do for oxygenation. When I lose power I only plug in a powerhead for each tank.

As mentioned above a Dremel with a diamond blade works perfectly for this just have to get the torch to retract which is a pain. A little direct flow in the powerhead helps though then just cut below the flesh where it's skeleton only.
