If there is a way to prevent it from getting sucked in like using a prefilter type foam or mesh or pantyhose, I would do that. I would not turn off the power heads if possible. When I uncovered my tank I saw my RBTA next to my return then realized it had split and I now have 2.

I covered mine and had my BP reactor off. But that's how I did it, it's not to say how you should do yours. After the 3 days I did a big water change for safe measure.
