There you go…you have Yin and Yang to tell you about T5’s. Can’t get any better. Now the only problem is who is Yin and who is Yang? ;D

Tiny white starfish too many ??

Jenn, you cannot post pictures directly.  They must come from a host site.  Here’s the link that tells you how to post pic’s on NJRC.  Note that you cannot use NJRC’s Photo Gallery unless you are a member.  I use Photobucket.  It’s free and easy to use...

What size pump should I use?????

If you haven’t done so already, you might wish to check out the DIY, tying into the basement: http://www.njreefers.org/joomla/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=26&topic=1926.0 In this particular build, they used a Sequence Pump. However, I haven’t looked up the spec’s, but I’m sure it pumps a...

Tiny white starfish too many ??

Keep an eye on them. Look to see if it’s the variety that munches on coral. As far as rapid growth, it seems that in some tanks they multiply like rabbits, while in others, they are rather slow growers. I have them and it’s not a problem. Every once in a while I’ll see maybe 4 or 5 and pluck...

re: how to clean the old tank?

White vinegar...let it soak. The vinegar is a mild acid that will take care of all the deposits very nicely.

    T5 Questions

Excuse the quasi highjack, but I think the answer to this could help here too: Could someone explain ballast math? That is, the IceCap 430 states it supports 330 watts yet I’m told I can only run two 48” (54W) T5’s on that ballast. When I do the math, that’s only 108 watts. If it will run 330...

Doing a little fish cleaning and came across cichlid stuff I’m no longer using. I know some of us are wise enough to also raise freshwater fish ;D, so if you have cichlids, here’s your chance for some freebees. Kent Liquid Cichlid Chemistry – 95% full Kent Liquid AF Cichlid, Malawi Buffer –...

To quote the website on info about Blue Tangs: "It sounds silly, but this a fish that seems to break out with ich if you even look at it the wrong way." You got ich!

No! Anyone can post pictures. However, there is a procedure that must be followed. It is not simply copy and paste. Here’s the scoop on posting pictures: http://www.njreefers.org/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=46&Itemid=25

    diy overflow chamber

Just make it.  The end cap and maybe the short piece of pipe at the top, wrap a couple of times with Teflon and push the two pieces together.  This way you can disassemble easily for cleaning. In addition, it was discussed in the text above, but not shown in the picture…inside the tank use a...

Some things bothering me about my tank

I agree with the other two responses…fish trap. You may buy, borrow or make one. Search DIY fish trap and see what you get. I even think I remember one made from a used soda bottle…pretty simple. In regard to your sump/refugium….for one, if you have the room below, no problem switching it out...

    Fish kill

My first thought is temperature. Could you have a heater that’s on the way out and maybe caused a spike in temp? The reason I say this is that I lost a whole tank to a malfunctioning heater…about 100 fish (albeit freshwater). In regard to something in the air….some “odors” readily dissolve in...

    Newbie Light question

I agree with Dave. If your interests right now are FOWLR, just buy a HD fixture. I have a couple of these on freshwater tanks. You can do this for under 20 clams. If future interests are for corals, no big loss…and you have saved on bulb costs and electrical consumption…it pays for itself!
