    I currently use RO/DI and make sure the readings are 0....why chance getting minerals or other impurities leaching into the tank.

    Nitrates

    After you do another water change of 25 gal,if your nitrates arent as low as you'd like them to be,you can do another water change to lower them some more.If you decide to do vodka dosing I would mix with orange juice to help with the taste;)

    Actually at a 1/2" layer of sand I wouldnt even bother with it,like Nikki said gets some nac snails and let them stir it up as they go.If cynao is a problem on the sand then def use a python or the like to rumble and syphon out the "affected" areas.
