The center brace can easily be replaced with a piece of 1/4" or better yet 1/2" glass. The width isn't important but the length is. I've done it to a 55, and I'd share a photo, but the Nexus is busy charging...

What medium are you using for your culture? I tried the coconut husk fiber used in vivariums, but I think the pH was too off for the worms.

If you're really serious about temperature calibration you need a NIST certified thermometer. I use this baby --- Long Stem Calibration Thermometer - Traceable --- and I'm very happy with it. For a little less money, I think I recently saw an email from Kevin at Hanna about a NIST thermometer...
