The female perc that has laid eggs twice - propelled itself out of the tank (no cover) on Friday. We heard her flapping on the floor. I put her back in and thought she was going to die. An hour later she was back by her "nest" and being guarded by the male.

those swing handle hydrometers are notorious for being inaccurate. See if you can borrow someone's refractometer - or purchase a new one. But definitely top off with fresh RO water (non-salted).
