not sure if you have ever been to that fish place in lancaster, pa. I mention it because supposedly it's retail space is about 100,000 sq ft. The place is like a costco for fish lovers (the warehouse aspect - no food sampling.. ;)). Now half the place is devoted to dogs, cats, reptiles, birds...
clams have been more and more restricted due to import issues.
That stated - I have seen Ocean Gallery II and Aquatic Obsessions get nice clams. If you prefer online - Dr. Mac/pacific.east.aquaculture and Clam's Direct have gotten great reviews.
as far as macna - i have never been either. I...
i have to get back to work ::) so i'll leave someone else to provide in depth answer -
tuning two 9.5s (one for each return) is giong to be difficult. better off just having one pump for both.
Also there is no hard and fast rule regarding a single return pump with manifold - or a smaller...
In teh event of pump failure - the tank will not implode. Most of the in habitants do not rely on the sump pump for flow - hopefully you set up your tank such that the bulk of the flow is coming from the powerheads.
A powerhead consumes far less electricity and you can set up a battery back up...
another thought - people always set up mixed reefs. What I mean is this:
Person gets a SPS cap, then a LPS Frogspawn, then a sun coral, then a gonipora, then an anemone, then a scallop/christmas worm, then maybe a sea hare.
You have filter feeders, moving stingers, photosynthesis needs...
to power the returns? an alternative to consider would be to get an external pump. A pair of 9.5s will definitely heat the tank a few degrees. Not that I would push you in this direction - but why two 9.5s instead of a single mag 18?
by the way -when you are ready to set your tank up and make the leap from cichlids - start a tale of the tank thread - then we can all follow along and provide tips/hints etc.
In terms of best value from a powerhead perspective - i think the tunze appear to retain their value relatively well...
