I'm using sam's old 48" G series (made in China). I don't have enough mileage to give you any feedback. I've read all the horror stories about the G but for now have been pleased with it's performance (no corals in my tank yet - still too new). There is another maker of LEDs based in the USa - I...
Hey everyone -
I was reading the sur4die's tale of the tank - and I think this got buried among all the recent posts.
Anyways - his nitrates are at 80ppm. He is using the 'Old' Sand that was in the tank (which he purchased complete).
I suggested a 100% water change - but I'm not sure. Any...
ouch....the sand bed is releasing a lot of crud - keep up with the water changes!
OR - do the extreme and move all your corals/fish into a separate holding tank. Then take OUT all the sand - and dump it. Re-load the tank with new sand and water (not to the top since you don't want to put...

JR - it was nice to meet you again. Next time maybe we'll have more time to break bread or something. I'm sure my kids would love to run around with yours.
Anyways - only update is that I set up my Titanium Ground Probe. Does everyone...

One other perhaps more realistic point of view (as opposed to ego) is - like a car, - one looks at "resale"...
ROFL.
Everyone has a way of assigning values differently. Picassos are genetically bred fish that you cannot find anywhere else. No one else breeds them (yet). So there is an intrinsic value to being "the first" and also there is some cost to breeding these (so to pay for the research).

Re: Here's my 120
a series of events like that would probably cause me to consider whether to stay in the hobby. That's crazy! Glad to see you got it all under control. I remember getting little tiny urchins from TBS - they were no bigger than a pencil eraser - yours must have been huge!
the check valve is used so that if power were to go out - the water would not backwash into the sump. At least that is how I see it designed by the Hidden Reef staff.
This makes sense if you plan on keeping the water close to the top of the sump.
BUT - check valves are known to falter - so why...
