    Your RO might be worthless

This is an excellent point. I have only replaced my RO membrane filter once in about 8 years, and that was only because I wanted one of those high silica removal membrane filters. This was about 3 years ago. Even the old RO membrane would reduce the TDS reading from about 160 to 2. The new one...

    Scratch removal

I have see methods for removing scratches from automobile glass using kits similar to this - offsite link - http://www.eastwoodco.com/jump.jsp?itemID=2024&itemType=PRODUCT However, these methods only work on very shallow scratches. If you can run your fingernail across the scratch, and it...

Adding a 150W halide to an existing fixture

Yes, I could see that happening. I'd pick the light I liked best, and change the other bulbs to that. You might also be able to rearrange the whole thing and get 4 250w mh's in there and alternate the bulbs in them, but that's a lot more power consumed, and heat produced.

led lighting - anyone deal with this company?

The high output LED used in LED lighting fixtures for aquariums are still out od sight (no joke intended) expensive. his is why I say give the industry a few years to get the productions costs down, and LED lighting will be a major player. For a nano, yes, you could consider using generally...

Info & Feedback wanted on Marine Salt Mixes

Yes, the S-15 is about achient history by now. As for asking a manufacturer about a breakdown of the salt they produce, want sort of response do you expect? No one is going to give away the exact formulations. You got the "standard form letter". As I seem to recall, and I'm digging up 25...

Info & Feedback wanted on Marine Salt Mixes

Having used Reef Crystals and plain old IO, I can state that I got much worse results with them then I do with Marine Environment, even after I added various stuff to it. Also, both reef crystals and IO do not completely dissolve, and leave a messy residue behind. I think all the numbers you...

led lighting - anyone deal with this company?

This is my opinion about the product. I doubt if anyone had actually tried it yet, especially since as of today, now, it can only be preordered. This looks like it could be an excellent product. With any new electronic product, it's usually easy to come out with one that is cheaper and better...

Info & Feedback wanted on Marine Salt Mixes

Yes, I'd have to agree the Marine Environment salt does have something of a cult following. I started using it about 15 years ago when a small, run out of the basement, out in the middle of nowhere, mom and pop, but excellent LFS told me about it. I found I got much better results than I did...

    Burlington -Local wet /dry builder

My thought is, why does this need to be a local person? there are plenty of manufactures that will build a sump exactly to your specs. Lifereef comes to mind and has an excellent reputation. See them here (offsite link) - http://www.lifereef.com/home.html

what's the real deal on the captive bred fish industry?

As I see this issue, there are several factors involved. First, many typical LFSs just are not interested. Captive bread SW fish tend to be a lot more expensive than their wild caught counterparts. For your typical LFS, this means those more expensive captive raised fish are just not going to...

Info & Feedback wanted on Marine Salt Mixes

Generally I agree with Carlo's post on salt mixes. I've used both salts, but that was quite a few years ago, and manufactures do change formulas. When I used Tropic Marin not all the tests we do today were generally available. It's a good point about Reef Crystals specifying a SG much lower...

    Another lighting question

I don't think that would be a problem, but if it does worry you, you could use silicon to cement a piece of metal, about 3/8" wide across the crack. Only cement one side to the glass, so you can still move the glass pains around.

Big Al's in PA...anyone been yet?

I may do that in the future, but right now the store is just too new to give it a fair rating. It could easily get a lot better or a lot worse. Call what I wrote a first impression. I'll check into them from time to time and keep you posted.

Need recommendations on 175w MH lamp

I think you have made an excellent bulb choice. You may not even need the actinics. You could use anything from 6500K to 20000K bulbs, but I think the 14000K to 17000K are about right for a reef. Others will like other bulbs.

Big Al's in PA...anyone been yet?

Well, I got to Big Al's today and had a look around. It's a store that I would consider worth a visit to, but nothing so over the top that you have got to see it now. Overall the store is clean, nicely decorated, and does have a large circular tank with a couple of small sharks in it. They...

That location isn't too far from me. With some luck, I may be able to visit this weekend. If I do, I'll write a report.

    id please

Looks like a bristle worm to me. Most are harmless. I will remove large ones though. When doing so, don't touch the spines, as they can break off in your skin and hurt. Use something like tweezers to remove them.

    Igniter issues Lighting

I had a similar problem with my Aqua Medic Space light. I removed all the ballasts and other junk, except the bulb holders. I rewired the entire fixture using Blue Line E Ballasts for the MHs. I used them because they could be mounted remotely, without the need for an additional box to house the...

Aquariums For Dummies - Just something to read

I read he article, and it's not bad for something that can be read in a few minutes. My big problem with this sort of thing, and similar to your own feelings on the subject, is that something that short can not possible convey all the information and knowledge needed to set up a successful reef...

    Auto Top off stuck on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think I've ever seen a magnetic switch fail because of "magnetization of the contacts". Do you have some additional information on this? If so I'd be very interested, because I've seen magnetic switched used in many (non-aquarium) applications over the years and seldom see a problem...
