That really depends on the amount of foodstuffs for them. If you overfeed and have lots of algae and detritus, you could probably keep more than one per gallon. If you have a relatively clean tank you'll probably want to keep it to maybe one per 3 gallons...maybe less.

I thought you always got the diatom bloom, and it just goes away. At least that's what happened in both of the tanks I set up.

Roger that. Well, luckily, we just redid some of our drain plumbing in the house, and we used LOTS of access ports in the lines, so I think I'll just drill a pvc cap and have this dump into the sewer. See...learn something new every day! Thanks for the info!
