Tank birthday and I'm a Geezer

I just came back from my knee Doctor. Kevorkian. My knee surgery is postponed for at least 6 months so now we can go to a Valentines party. That is not the reason we cancelled it though. It seems that even though the last surgery didn't work, a new one may make it worse due to neuroma. I...

Tank birthday and I'm a Geezer

One of my 30 year old powerheads croaked last night so my skimmer and algae scrubber was dry. No water was going into the reverse UG filter either. I took the thing apart and repaired it with some shrink tubing which is the repair they need every 30 years. I think this was made in...

Tank birthday and I'm a Geezer

Mark, I never bought livestock online as I was always surrounded by LFSs and they had a selection. I also used to be able to tell them to get me something. Now, years later, I moved and am no longer near those places and the one I am near, there are all new people and don't know anything or...

Tank birthday and I'm a Geezer

Today I took my wife for her MRI and on the way home I always stop at an LFS near there. The place is really going down hill and they never have anything anymore. I go in there with a pocket full of money and can't buy anything because they have the same old common stuff. :( I ended up with...

    Steam Punk Lamp

Christine, Thank you. 14 pieces sold in Uptown Manhattan on 74th street in a Gallery called "An American Craftsman". He moved and I don't want to send stuff there so now the rest of them, 6 so far are in a gallery on the North Fork of Long Island NY. I don't want her to sell them yet as I want...

How it used to be, for us and the fish

I probably found them somewhere. It's not like there was a store. Amado. I never dipped anything and never had any problem pests.

How it used to be, for us and the fish

Equalizer, I got the camera, a Polaroid from a PX bird which was a helicopter that every month or so would bring writing paper, pencils and stuff like that. I think it was $6.00. We couldn't get film developed of course so that was it and film was expensive and very hard to come by unless my...

How it used to be, for us and the fish

I realize many peoplr have pest problems but in all these years and no dipping, quarantining, medication I never got any pests that actually harmed anything and they all, without exception left on their own with no help from me. Bubble algae, flat worms, cyano, crabs, eels, nudibranchs...

How it used to be, for us and the fish

Equalizer, not all my pictures from Nam depict that. Here is a "Friend" I acquired there. He walked out of the jungle and stayed with me for a week or so eating rats. This was a LOH and my Captain friend used to deliver us mail and orders on it. He taught me how to fly (with him) and we...

How it used to be, for us and the fish

Yes we do, we get bacteria from everything, but I feel if we fill a tank at the start with live rock from the sea, it will have a better start than starting with dead rock and waiting to get bacteria piece meal from frags and hermit crabs. Of course it will work either way,

How it used to be, for us and the fish

If were doing Army pictures, I have some. These are from Nam. I built this 30 round magazine for my M-16. If it were not for that, I probably wouldn't be here now. This was not for training. We fired 6 of these at a time almost constantly. This is from the battle I was in. That guy...

Tank birthday and I'm a Geezer

It's over 60 degrees here and I almost went swimming as I just came back from collecting water which is 40 degrees. I am diatom filtering it now because it is full f seaweed. It was very windy and the pump didn't want to stay underwater in the surf so it kept coming back on to the beach. I...

How it used to be, for us and the fish

Equalizer, this reminds me of a story One day in Nam we were standing around in a firebase, (clearing in the jungle with some small field artillery), There was maybe 20 of us. This guy lands and comes over. He had a helmet on with sticks all over it, chamaflage paint all over his face. 4 or 5...

How it used to be, for us and the fish

If you start a tank with dry rock, the only bacteria that tank will have is from whatever bacteria is in your LFS tank from when you buy coral. A lot of his bacteria is from his wholesaler and remember his tanks received his fish in water that was treated with who knows what. The bacteria we...

How it used to be, for us and the fish

Equalizer, thank you for posting. I never had 18" arms, well I never measured them but I am sure they were no way near that. Maybe my neck but I don't know. :) I do find many young people today to be snowflakes. We don't even train our military anymore to be men which is a shame and we are...

How it used to be, for us and the fish

I still like rock from the sea. I also take mud from the sea all the time to throw in my tank and in 14 months my reef will be fifty years old so it can't hurt

How it used to be, for us and the fish

Dry, dead rock is definitely a problem and no tank would be healthy with that. It is almost impossible to get a tank started like that without going on the disease forum.

How it used to be, for us and the fish

I spent a year living in mud in Viet Nam. We never washed our hands, or anything else as we didn't have much water or soap. We got bitten by mosquitoes constantly and were always cut either from the bamboo or shrapnel. No one died "from that". We also had no clean drinking water. We just pushed...
