    Yes The hose allows for an air release inside the pipe,I believe it helps to regulate the water into a better stream with less resistance.

    Even if it's a straight shot you still need to add something for an air release or you'll get gargling and possibly flushing noises.

    I know its old school, and not around all that much anymore...and can be a pest. But i love this stuff

    Its one of the best filter feeding corals ever,it's manageable all you need to do is keep it away from the main scape and trim it .
