I am impressed!!!! The only way I could ever tell species is to look for the label.
Now I'm not sure about wood that old, but pretty much all wood today has a stamp that tells you the species.
As example, if fir, it would be labeled Doug Fir or D-Fir.

As I'm pouring water into my Brute I see a 200 watt heater that sits up against the side/bottom of this polyethylene can.....and no problem with melting there....And the polyethylene most likely has a lower melt temperature.
I don't see an issue. I have two 300w heaters mounted back to back on an acrylic baffle using PVC conduit clamps. Here's a shoot of that baffle with clamps....while I was building the sump.
It's a miracle! After spending some time first figuring out what each cord ran, I had the tank back running last night, with the exception of my lights. It was night anyway and figured I'd work on the lights today. So I'm dinking around with the tank this morning and figured I'd plug in...
It's hard to believe your pH is that low.....unless you have a severe CO2 problem.
What salt are you using and do you do anything to maintain alk, calc and magnesium levels?
