They do sell small drop in chillers for nanos....they fit in your fan slot, cost is about 100 bucks if I ever go back to running mine that will be an option.

Don't give up on the cuke ... I had one go missing in a nano for weeks...so in a in 10X the size he could take a season vacation and you won't find him. Until they get as big as MikeM's then besides being ugly they cannot be missed.

I have layers like an onion. ;D Mud/sand/rubble/cheato. I have filter socks on both my drains and honestly I don't have problems with built up gunk in my fuge. I guess I don't have big rocks but I do have rubble and I have good pod growth.

Bare bottom tank. You can put the sponge in your DT sump to accumulate helpful bacteria. I suppose the whisper filter will work if you want to use it just make sure you keep the media you use super clean.

Well maybe it would be overkill....most of the nano's are pretty crummy....your idea of getting a octopus or some similar HOB skimmer is a good one. More then you need yes, actually works yes, usable when you upgrade yes ;D. Doing diligent goodsized water changes would be another solution.

Well the controllers are usually just the controller and sometimes they come with the temp probe. So there are lots of add ons PH probe, outlets like the DC 4 and DC 8 for the ACjr., computer cables, break out boxes so you hook them to alarms ect. I am not an expert honestly I have a couple days...

The other one is the AC JR....about the same price with the bells and whistles...without the bells and whistles the other is a bit cheaper.
