Don't worry about switching the pump around. My skimmer is the same with the gate valve at the bottom. Good thing about that is micro bubbles are zero. Not sure if that is the reason exactly as I have a recirculating skimmer but if it works ;).

If water is going through but no air make sure you don't have a plug in the airline? Just a guess.

I second the removal of the crushed coral and giving everything a fast cleaning. Also the one real potential problem is if you have anything other then the clown fish. No chocolate chip starfish right? Just make sure everthing is reef safe. I don't really care for cp lights prefer T5 by a mile...

I personally like a sand bed. To me it is all depends on if you like the look or not.

I am always in favor of buying used rock....no curing needed(and we allllll know how patient you are ;)) you get a lot of free hitchhikers, and we don't use up resources which is what Marco Rock is doing. I am sure Phyl and Johns rocks won't get thrown away but still conservation is good.

There was a very good article in TFH this month or last about reflectors on bulbs and the difference it makes. What I took from it is that so long as you have some reflector it is a good thing either individual or one piece.
