I think it's a matter of necessity. For a new cycling tank....nothing, just some sponge/floss to catch the junk that'll be floating around. Later on when some fish are added, you could go with carbon just to keep the water clear. That with a skimmer should hold you down for a while.

It's an old Tek light that I mod'd. Just cut out a hole in the top and cut out the 2 center reflectors, added new ballasts and that's it.

Its DIMS (36” x 15” x 13”) so it seems long but pretty shallow....which I feel is a good thing. Give you easy access to the tanks sandbed and what not. Something like this is what I'm referring to. (Pic I found off the internet)
