40 Breeder?

Hey guys so I have a 24 nano DX and around the forums I see people with what they call a 40 breeder. Now what is the difference between this and say, any other smaller sized tank? What kind of equipment do you use for those of you that have one? Use a sump? What kind of lighting? I like the size of it and might take one up. Thanks all in advance, any information about your own tank is awesome.

a 40 breeder is a tank that measures 36 x 18 x 17. it's got an excellent footprint. that's why it's a popular tank. as far as components, that varies with each person. a 30 breeder is another excellent tank. it's the same, except for the depth (top to bottom) which is about 13".

Anyone who has one or has had one could you please post all of the equipment you use? I would love to get one but have no idea where to start as far as if a sump would be needed and all of the lighting etc. Thanks in advance.

For lighting I've seen...

  • 4 through 8 bulb 36" T5 setups
  • a single 250 MH (with and without actinic support)
  • dual 150 MHs

and combinations in between.

For sumps, I've mainly seen 20g, but a few will go up to another 40B. (Jerzsky here comes to mind.)

For flow... a strange affinity for the Quietone 4000 series pumps on the return with vortechs/powerheads/closed loop for the main tank flow.

When in doubt, buy for a 65g because it has the same size footprint.

On mine I was running a 250W SE MH w/ 2 VHO actinics.

For plumbing I had a lifereef overflow leading to a 20G tank with a euroreef skimmer and two fluidized reactors, one for carbon, one for GFO.
Return was driven by a panworld pump (major overkill) through a SCWD. I also had several maxijets on a wavemaker.

What I would have done differently would have been to have an internal overlow installed, to reduce my risk of floods and just make the tank look cleaner. I would have gone with a moderate rate return pump. In addition I would have looked into having the back panel drilled for a close loop in hopes of getting good circulation, and minimizing hardware in the tank.

I have seen some really amazing 40G B on reefcentral, many of which are pretty simple setups, and wish my tank could have looked nearly as good as those.

I have a 40 breeder. it is on my kitchen island. I use no equipment whatsoever.an aquaclear 110 as a refugium and a couple power heads . you can check it out in tale of the tank under my 40 breeder.those pictures are a few months old ,lately my tank has been exploding w life. anyone who has seen it has been blown away by lack of equipment and abundance of health.you are welcome to stop by and check out how simple reefkeeping can be .

heres a pic from this morning. Up in the left corner is an urchin I caught last night ,have to bring him to the lfs today. he was eating my coraline.Ive raised him since he didnt exist.now 4 inches.he was cool but has to go. anyway this pic is only 5 min after lights on so not that impressive but you can get an idea. I use pc lighting.
