72" VHO Height question

OK i need some guidance ladies and gents.. I'm going to run my 6ft VHO's for a little while while the tank runs mostly fallow and i get other stuff in.. How high should i be mounting my tubes from the surface of the water. These will be inside a canopy that is as wide and long as the tank and the top of it is 10 1/2"

You can run VHOs less than1" from the top of the tank. They don't need to be placed far away like MHs. If fact you'll usually get the best light out of them this way.

But... you want to let the tank fallow for awhile. So if you have no hight light requirement corals or other livestock, you can light the tank with very modest lighting. You might even want to keep it very low to discourage algae. Of course, if you don't maintain the tank well, ramping the light back up will cause an algae bloom.

Thanks Dave. The tank is fallow for the moment because if i put something in there and try to put 200+ lbs of Rock in then I'm sure there will be casualties. the tank is 30" deep so i didn't know what the effective range for these lights were. I'll make something up and mount them a little lower, they are mostly to supplement 3 250 watt MH's

Instead of polluting the forum with dumb questions..

I'm Assuming by the included picture that I am missing some sort of apparatus or mounting Device for these waterproof endcaps. If not could someone let me know how to mount them?

I believe (and it's been several years since I mounted my VHO retro kit) - you need a "standoff" .

Basically you screw the endcaps into the standoff - and the standoff into your canopy.

yea thanks hawkeye i ordered new endcaps for S&G + the stand off mounts.. I also had to contact Ice Cap to get a replacement fuse cap and fuse since mine came with none.. I scratched my head, double and triple checking everything till i realized there was no fuse or anyway to keep a fuse in the ballast

yup thats what i ordered.. :) And :ranton: GRRRRR Fed-ex got here so late with my corals from Sonny.. :rantoff:
